Mr Carey's Summer Message to Everyone. . .
We have almost reached the end of the school year in this the strangest of all school years. Since we were forced to close in an effort to prevent Covid-19 and protect society we have all struggled at times to cope with this ’new normal’. The truth is, it has been anything but normal. However, as society and business reopen it gives us much hope together with the expected return of all children and staff to school in September. As a staff we have endeavoured to provide a service to you within the means that were at our disposal. While providing school work was one element of this, we were very conscious of families’ wellbeing and the desire to connect children with their classmates and teachers. Our efforts to ‘connect’ with you has made us feel good and I hope that you all got that feeling as well!
I would like to congratulate all the 6th class pupils who graduated from primary school via ’Zoom’ on Wednesday evening. The main objectives were to mark their time in primary school in an appropriate manner and to have all children and their families present online. Both objectives were achieved and our first virtual graduation was a resounding success, and I would like to thank all those involved for making it possible. This particular group of children are a credit to themselves and their families. They have enhanced Gilson NS during their time in primary school and while we will miss them, we wish them the very best of luck in secondary school and the next stage of life’s journey for them.
Classes have been allocated time slots for the return of school books and the collection of items from class. Teachers will have been in contact with you in relation to this and a text message was sent to all families. When coming to the school children or parents can enter through the main entrance and leave via the nearest exit. Rental books can be dropped at a designated position in the school hall and other items can be collected from the classrooms where the class teacher will be in attendance. Where there is more than one child in a family, one visit to the school will suffice.
As the school is coming to a conclusion I would like to thank Ms Brady and Ms Gorman for their contributions to Gilson NS both of whom had joined us this year on a temporary basis.
A special word of thanks to John Duffy who is retiring this summer. John has served the school as caretaker with distinction over the past 14 years. The role of ‘caretaker’ had many different facets as John was our security manager, painter, maintenance man and retriever of hundreds of footballs from rooftops and God’s knows where! He brought joy to many a child’s face when he was able to find that precious ball. John took pride in his work and to his credit the exterior and interior of the school have always looked well because of his efforts. John was always willing and able and he never complained. On behalf of the staff of Gilson NS I would like to thank John again and wish him many years of happiness and health in his retirement with his wife Mary and family.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy and safe summer holiday. Don’t forget to register for ‘Meath PE’ day which takes place on Wednesday, 24th June to mark the end of the school year. You can register by clicking on the link provided on the last message. Hopefully, we can all return to school on Tuesday, 1st September and enjoy school life again in the best way we can.
Until then.

Well done and best wishes to 6th class.
6th CLASS OF 2020
‘Twas back in 2011, one fine September morn,
Class of 2020’s memories were born.
Ye were all so small back then, divided between room eleven and room one,
Some were even quite shy, though your confidence soon shone!
The days passed by, then weeks and months, and soon a year was done,
Onto senior infants for lots more learning and more fun.
Those infant years were great, learning jolly phonics and no big hassles,
Trips to Best o’Matz, visits from Santa and even a bouncy castle.
First class next, an extra hour, ye stayed in school ‘til three,
Off to Mellows on your tour and playing in the boys’ alley.
In second class you had First Communion, the build-up was so cool,
Ye went to Crystal Maze and then you were half way through primary school.
Third and Fourth classes flew by- it seemed each year was going quicker,
Tours to Mullingar, Fort Lucan and Croker, and a visit from a helicopter.
Fifth class came and went, a cool Easter egg hunt to enter,
Ag canadh ‘Na Mílte Bliain’ and a tour to the Aquatic Centre.
Your sixth and final year definitely did not go to plan,
Luckily your Confirmation Day was before the Covid-19 Ban!
Eight years of memories, you have all built up to recall,
Lunchtimes playing in the yard, hanging out and shooting basketball.
You remember our annual sports day, where ye all fought for a place,
But the real highlight was ice-cream and watching the teachers’ race.
Trips to the library and the museum in Ballyjamesduff,
Credit Union Quizzes, though the questions were quite tough.
You celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge in Gilson NS each year,
‘Gaeilgeoir na tseachtaine’ prizes stepped up your ‘caint ón ár dTír’.
Tráth na gCeist agus laethanta glasa were also part of this,
And the ceilí and the cheolchoirm is something you will miss.
Memories of various weather conditions out on Gilson grounds,
Your favourite was the snow and ice, as you loved slipping and sliding around.
Christmas concerts in the Showhall began during your time here,
You performed ‘Fittest Family’ as your act in your final year.
Green Schools and Gaelbhratach, Active Schools and more,
Those who were on these committies- your talents came to the fore.
On sporting fronts ye did so well- tennis and rugby too,
Olympic Handball, cross country and swimming in Kells pool.
Both the girls and boys made history in Cumann na mBunscoil Competitions,
First the girls won the Pat Sheridan cup and mini sevens, then the boys were on a mission.
And mission was accomplished and accomplished in great style,
Ye footballers from class of 2020 have brought us all reason to smile.
You have learned so much in the past eight years, to read and write and more,
You’ve learned to play tin whistle, and even sew a stopper for your door!
But most importantly you’ve learned to always try your best,
As long as you do that, don’t worry about the rest.
Work hard, be happy and confident in everything you do,
And remember your friends are always there to help you to get through.
As individuals we have watched you grow and are very proud of all that you do,
We hope you will support each other no matter what life throws at you.
Your Graduation is unique- the first Gilson one on zoom,
Who would have thought we wouldn’t be allowed in the same room?
It’s Goodbye for now, but don’t forget to visit – we’d love to stay in touch,
Class of 2020 you’ll be missed in Gilson National School very much.

15th June Mr Carey's Message
I hope that everyone is well as we enter the last full week of school year 2019/2020. It has been a unique year with many challenges but on Friday, the DES (Department of Education and Skills) gave us positive news when they published a report called ‘Planning for reopening schools in line with the Roadmap for reopening society and business’. It is their intention that all children will return to school in September which adds clarity for us all after much speculation over the past number of weeks. The details of the reopening will be published in the coming weeks and we will ensure that all protocols are in place for a safe return to school. Click on the link below to view Friday’s report.
https://www.education.ie/en/covid-19/planning-for-reopening-schools.pdf
On Wednesday 6th class will have their graduation via ‘zoom’. They have been busy over the past number of weeks preparing for this event and we are looking forward to our first virtual graduation. We know that this will not be the same as a physical graduation but it is very important that we mark the children’s’ transition from primary school to secondary school.
Teachers are finalising class reports which will be posted next week. If you have changed address since last year’s reports were issued please inform us by email @ gilsonprimary@gmail.com.
We are currently organising the return of rental books and the collection of items children need to take from their classrooms. This will take place on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd of June for all classes except 6th class (Thursday 18th for 6th). Each class will be given time slots which teachers will inform you of later in the week.
While there is always a natural winding down of school work at this time of year I would encourage you all to remain active and to ensure that physical activity is part of your daily routine. This is important for both mind and body.
Meath Coaching & Games have developed a new resource for remote coaching to support schools.
Their aim is to keep a presence in schools with continued training and support to students and teachers. Their first big event will be on the 24th June live on YouTube for all students of all abilities named "Meath PE". During this event they will conduct a full PE session live and attending to all needs and capabilities. It will be a generic session, not just GAA, so that it will appeal to all students.
They are aiming for this to be the biggest ever PE session Ireland has ever seen.

June 8th : Mr Carey's Message to Everyone
The glorious spell of weather may have come to an end but last week finished on a positive note for everyone in as An Taoiseach announced the acceleration of the roadmap to opening society and business last Friday. This is good news for the country as a whole and will have a positive impact on everyone’s wellbeing as well as a boost to the economy. It is testament to us as a society, as the vast majority of citizens have heeded the public health advice which has helped suppress the virus. It is important that this is maintained going forward.
Many children were reconnected with their classmates and teachers last week through ‘zoom’. The vast majority of parents returned the consent forms, giving permission for children to participate in ‘zoom’ classes. There has been a very positive response to the classes from children and parents alike. As a staff we are very aware that children have been missing their classmates and teachers and this initiative will address this in a small but significant way. Teachers have also reported very positively about the success of ‘zoom’ and enjoyed reconnecting with their classes in this way. Keep an eye on your emails as the classes will continue this week to ensure that you don’t miss out!
As we approach the end of the school year we will organise time slots for children to return their rented books and for the collection of any belongings that they may have in the classrooms. This will happen in the last week and you will be given notification prior to that.
Teachers have outlined this week’s school work under the class section of the website. We realise that it is difficult to maintain momentum in relation to school work as we approach an ‘unnatural’ end to the school year. ‘Less is more’ at this stage and you can choose what you would like to do from the menu teachers have prepared for you. It is great to see examples of the various activities you have been up to published on the website. If you wish to contact the school in relation to anything you can contact us @ gilsonprimary@gmail.com or phone 086 1894922 for assistance. Remember to stick together and support one another while always adhering to all the public health guidelines and restrictions. They have served us well thus far and now is not the time to become complacent.

Our Message from all of us to all all of you . . .
Reeling in the Years!
Enjoy a little look back at some of the activities that make up part of school life.!
Sacraments Time in Gilson NS
The children and the teachers in Gilson NS were busy last week as we celebrated the Sacraments.
Children in 2nd Class received their Sacrament of First Penance under the guidance of Ms O'Brien and Mr Geraghty. They attended a special ceremony in St Brigid's Church along with parents.
Following that, the children in 6th Class received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our local retired bishop Rev Michael Smith consecrated mass with children from our two 6th classes along with the children from Moylagh NS. Following the ceremony there were refreshments for all in the school hall where parents, children and sponsors enjoyed a welcome cup of tea.
Well done to all for their hard word in the preparation for these events - children, teachers Ms O'Brien, Mr Geraghty, Ms Flynn and Mr Harten. A special thank you to the school choir who sang beautifully on the day. Well done also to the parents who provided the refreshments.

Medal Presentation Time
We had a medal presentation in our school hall to award medals to the children who had won prizes in the local Agricultural Show last year. The children had produced art work of a very high standard, poetry and stories which was on display in the Show Hall during the Show. The high standard of the work produced by Gilson NS students meant that we were overall winners and so we retained the Kathleen Boylan Perpetual Cup for the year. Well done to all the students and to everyone who drew pictures, wrote poems and did lovely handwriting to represent our School. Keep up the good work and let's keep that Cup for another year!
Snow Fun in Gilson .......
The snow made a welcome visit to our school today and everyone made the most of it. It didn't take long for everyone to get to the courts and the grass to gather enough snow to make a few snow men. There were a lot of very cold fingers and toes afterwards but it was worth it!!
Grandparents Day 2020
Our annual Grandparents Day was a great success once again this year as we had a great turnout! Over 150 grannies, grandads and other important people in the lives of the children in our school turned up to hear some lovely singing and some short prayers and readings during the short ceremony which was conducted by Fr Kelly.
This was followed with an opportunity for a visit to the classrooms to see where the children sit each day and also to chat with teachers.
Finally, a cup of tea was available in the school hall and a chance for a chat! It was a lovely morning and very enjoyable for all. We look forward to our social event again next Grandparents Day.
Well done to all the children for the beautiful singing and to Ms Chapman and Ms Galligan for their work on the songs. Maith sibh go léir!

Christmas Concert Time Again!
It was time for our annual Christmas Concert and once again the children put on a fabulous display in the Show Hall. All the classes were involved and treated us to Christmas songs, poems, drama and of course the Nativity Play by Ms Ní Chéidigh's Junior Infants. Santa hats, Christmas jumpers and Christmas fashion were all on display on the stage. All classes took their turns and sang their hearts out to provide a great colourful and entertaining performance for everyone! The children from 6th Class closed the show with guest appearances from Barack Obama, Michael D Higgins, Donald Trump and Boris himself fresh after his election victory!
It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon and special thanks goes to the teachers for all their work and a special word of thanks to Mrs Galligan.
A thank you too to Oldcastle GFC for the use of the hall and to Larry for his patience! Well done to all the children who enjoyed their day on the stage.

Medal Presentation in School!
We welcomed special visitors to our school last week to present medals to our boys football team.
Terry Farrelly who captained Gilson NS the last time they won this Cumann na mBunscol Division 2 Cup back in 1995, along with another past pupil Paddy Gilsenan called in to present the medals to our lads.
The boys once again made their way through a whole school audience to loud cheers and claps, with the Sunday Game tune to be heard loudly in the hall. Some parents were able to come along too and enjoy the presentation.
The boys then listened to a few words of advice from the older lads before taking some photos to capture the occasion.
It certainly was a great finale to the football journey this year and the boys will have many memories for many years to come.
Well done to all and a special thank you to Terry and to Paddy for attending.

Special award for Thomas
Another proud moment for our school. We were delighted to receive the news that Thomas Sheridan's superb performance in the schools' final resulted in him receiving the Meath Chronicle 'Spirit of the Final' award. This award goes to a player who shows leadership, skill, ability and sportsmanship on the day and Thomas displayed this in abundance in the final.
Thomas' day got even better, when he received a second award, the Mikey Leddy award. This special award is in recognition of Thomas being the top player of all the finals played in Páirc Táilteann on the day.
This finishes off a very special time for Thomas and our school football team.
Well done Thomas!

Football Champions!
Our boys' football team are Meath Cumann na mBunscol Div 2 Champions for 2019! The boys captured the title in an exciting game against Kildalkey N.S in Páirc Táilteann. Our boys' togged out in the lucky white and blue jerseys we received from the club last year, to claim our first title in 24 years!
The miserable, wet conditions didn't faze the boys and they got off to a great start as the forwards took all their scoring opportunities. The boys found the back of the net early on in the game and they gained confidence as the game went on. They started to dominate the game in the key areas and this dominance continued right to the end. The boys were ably led by their joint captains, Pat Crawley and Lee Keatinge. It was a tremendous team performance on the day as all the boys played brilliantly and everyone got their chance to play.
A special mention goes to Thomas Sheridan who gave an exhibition in defending, playing with confidence, skill and setting up many attacks throughout the game.
When the final whistle blew, there were cheers of delight from players, managers and supporters alike.
Well done to the boys who all got to play on the day. A special thanks goes to Mr. Harten and Mr Geraghty who trained the boys in school. Indeed, a special thank you to the club trainers who worked so hard with the boys in the club all during the year.
Well done boys, we are all very proud of you!!

Football news...........!!
Our girls and boys teams have been out playing their semi finals, away at neutral venues, with mixed results!!
The boys had a fantastic semi final win over Lismullen this week. They played their match in Gibbstown in cold and wintry conditions, but that didn't pose a problem for the boys from Gilson NS. They played with great skill and determination and showed great teamwork to emerge as winners. They were well coached by Mr Harten and Mr Geraghty. The boys now look forward to a final meeting against Kildalkey in Páirc Tailteann so more training and team talks as we get ready for a day out to support our great lads!
Our girls were in very hard luck to lose out to Dunboyne in a close, tight match, losing very narrowly in the end. All the girls played so well and competed so well all during the match, so we were so disappointed to lose out in the end.
Well done to the girls themselves and to Mrs Galligan who trained the girls so well this year where they played against very tough opposition winning all their games up to the semi final.
Well done girls and boys of Gilson NS. We're very proud of you!!
Mid Term Break
Hallowe'en is soon upon us and our mid-term break!
Our first term is half way through and it's been a busy time here in Gilson NS. Our Junior Infants have settled in and are finding their way around the school! We said goodbye to Ms Noonan who took up a permanent position in Roscommon and we welcome Ms Gorman to our school, who will be teaching 4th class and we hope she enjoys her time her in Oldcastle.
Our footballers have been very busy with games and both boys and girls have played and won all their games, so they are looking forward to more games after the break.
In our school garden we have been harvesting some of our vegetables. We collected and distributed cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and raspberries and children got a chance to taste the harvest!
Earlier this year we planted some pumpkins and hoped to have some ready for Hallowe'en. They grew very well for us and we cut them and placed them in a sunny window eagerly watching them turn from green to bright yellow and orange.
We would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween!

A Trip to Oldcastle Railway Station
Children in 3/4th Class had a special visitor last week when Michael Timmins came in to talk to them all about Oldcastle Railway.
Michael's dad had worked in the station many years ago and he had many stories to tell to the children all about the train when he was a young lad. It was a memorable day and was a great chance to see how life was in Oldcastle, before the train closed in 1963. We really enjoyed the day and are very grateful to Michael for all his help and his knowledge. Please follow the link to our class page to see some special photos of the train in Oldcastle over 60 years ago. |
